Six Feet Under Opening Sequence Nine Screen Analysis

I have choose to analyze Six Feet Under as it sticks with our original idea that we were not going to have any dialogue and just have a couple of close ups.

The first thing I notice about this opening / title sequence is that all of the title and names get incorporated with the on screen objects , which makes it look like their has been a lot of thought went in to this title sequence. I have also found that to every title the on screen object is rather moving or if the object is static then they use camera movement to keep the movement such as they do a when we see the gun and then we get a slow fade transition from the top to reveal the dead body in the morgue, This could suggest that the the body has been killed by the gun that we seen in the last shot.
 Fade From Top Transition

Listening to the music and the background music every time a title becomes clear we hear a emphasis of a very low bass sound which makes you search the screen for the title.

we then see our first bit of prof that suggests that there is something weird and paranormal about this story line. As we see a man in the corridor and with in 3 seconds he has fade out into the bright light

While we are watching the title sequence I think we are getting a short story of what has built up to the story line that we are about to see in the film as the title sequence takes us along on a journey. There is a lot of things which symbolize death and murder. at first we see a close up of some one washing their hands which could suggest that we see them washing the blood of their hands. Near the end of the sequence we get to see a coffin which we see in a grave yard which suggest a burial and then with in the grave yard we see a black crow which is also known to suggest death.

We are not introduced to any characters faces at this point. Another good way they have integrated the titles with the on screen objects and locations is that they use the grave stone as a object to place one of the titles on. They have kept all the title font and size the same through out the sequence and they have not followed most over horror films ways and made the text look like blood.

We then see the last title which again uses the on screen object which in this case might suggest loneliness as there is only one tree in the middle of the field. It is then washed and then is used as the film logo or title picture which may suggest that the tree is a important object in the films story line.

We then see the title sequence shuts with directed by. Which had is still using the tree thumbnail after the title fades out the full screen fades to white and then the narration begins.
